Insurance is the least glamorous topic in production, and also one of the most important. I learned this building Biricik Media — you do not appreciate insurance until you need it, and by then, if you do not have it, the consequences can end your company.
General Liability Insurance
This is non-negotiable. General liability covers property damage, bodily injury, and personal injury claims arising from your production activities. Most professional venues, locations, and clients require proof of general liability insurance before allowing production on their premises. Typical coverage: $1-2 million per occurrence.
Equipment Insurance (Inland Marine)
Camera bodies, lenses, lighting kits, audio equipment — the replacement cost of a professional production kit can easily exceed $50,000. Equipment insurance covers theft, damage, and loss whether equipment is in your studio, in transit, or on location. Some policies also cover rented equipment, which is essential if you supplement your kit with rental gear.
Errors and Omissions (E&O)
E&O insurance protects against claims of copyright infringement, defamation, invasion of privacy, and professional negligence in your delivered content. This is particularly important for commercial production where content reaches large audiences and the potential for claims increases with visibility.
Workers Compensation
Required in most states if you have employees. Even if you primarily work with freelance crew, some states require workers comp coverage for independent contractors engaged in production activities. Check your state's requirements and comply — the penalties for non-compliance far exceed the cost of coverage.
Insurance is not an expense. It is a business survival requirement. One uninsured incident can destroy everything you have built.
Certificate of Insurance (COI)
Clients and locations frequently request a Certificate of Insurance before production begins. Your insurance provider should be able to issue COIs quickly — sometimes same-day. Having this process streamlined signals professionalism and prevents production delays.
How Much Insurance Costs
Annual premiums for a small production company typically range from $2,000-$5,000 for basic coverage. More comprehensive packages including E&O and higher limits run $5,000-$10,000 annually. This is a fraction of the potential cost of a single uninsured claim.
